Quality assurance and quality enhancement of education

Quality assurance includes all activities aimed at ensuring, developing, and improving the quality of education. The quality assurance is based on standards and guidelines determined by the European Higher Education Area (ESG) and the national quality assurance system established by the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ).

The Faculty of Law's structure for monitoring the quality enhancement of education is composed of the following central parts:

  • Establishment and discontinuation of courses and study programmes
  • Equality and equal opportunities
  • Course evaluations and course evaluation reports
  • Quality dialogue
  • Student influence
  • Student rights representatives
  • Evaluation of ongoing courses and study programmes

Equality, equal opportunities, and diversity

The Faculty of Law is continually working toward acheiving equality, equal opportunities, and diversity via the Gender Equality and Equal Opportunities Committee. You are welcome to contact the committee if you have noticed issues or have ideas for improvement that concern equality, equal opportunities, or diversity. Course evaluations and course evaluation reports

A course evaluation and a course evaluation report schould be filled out after each course has finished. The aim is to obtain the students' views on the course, to create a basis for developing the course and to respond to the students' feedback.

Course evaluation

Students should be granted the opportunity to anonymously express their views to teachers/examiners by filling out a course evaluation for each course.

The master's programmes

Programme meetings are held twice each semester in which the directors of the master's programmes, the master's programme coordinator, and the student representatives review the results from the students' course evaluations. The student representatives get the opportunity to express which problems and strengths they consider to be central for the courses. The programme directors can explain the background of the pedagogical and administrative decisions that have been made and ask questions to the student representatives to recive their meaningful input. The meetings are a basis for developing each course and the programmes.

During the fall 2020, the process surrounding course evaluations and course evaluation reports was evaluated by the Educational Committee (NUGA). A proposal has been made together with the Law Students' Union on how to improve the process, which will be implemented during the fall 2021.

Quality dialogue

As a part of the faculty's work on quality assurance, a quality dialogue concerning education is done yearly with the Department of Education Strategy Support at Lund University. The dialogue is based on several questions and areas of development.

The quality dialouge aims to provide an overview of the education's conditions, development, and challenges. The dialouge should ensure and enable that work on quality assurance and development is highlighted and followed up.

Student influence

The faculty's work on quality assurance and quality enhancement is done in close cooperation with students and doctoral students. Their engagement in the faculty's boards and committees is a crucial resource, and the faculty works systematically to enable student influence by ensuring that students and doctoral students take part in evaluating and developing the faculty.

Students at the first-cycle (bachelor level) and second-cycle (master's level) are represented in the Law Students' Union. The Law Students' Union select representatives to various boards at the faculty and are represented in the Educational Committee, the Faculty Board, and more. The Law Students' Union is also responsible for course representatives at each semester at the faculty's study programmes.

Visit the Law Students' Union's website.

Students at the third-cycle (doctoral students) are represented by Lund's Doctoral Student Union (LDK) through The Law Doctoral Student Council (JDR). The Law Doctoral Student Council name representatives to various boards at the faculty and are represented in the Faculty Bord, the Committee on Doctoral Education (NUF), and more.

Student rights representatives

There are four student rights representatives at the faculty who represent students in matters regarding the physical and psychosocial study environment. You can always contact the student rights representatives to recive help and support with your education or regarding incidents that occur in conjunction with your studies.

Evaluation of ongoing courses and study programmes

On 2018-03-15, the Vice-Chancellor decided on a Policy for quality assurance and quality enhancement of education at Lund University (dnr V 2016/179) as well as the Regulations for quality assurance and quality enhancement of education at Lund University (dnr STYR 2016/179). The documents state that the Faculty Board is responsible for evaluating the education at the faculty with the goal that all studies leading to a degree should be evaluated every six years, starting 1 January 2019.

Based on the policy and the regulation, the Faculty Board has decided that the Vice-Dean has the principal responsibility for each evaluation. The Committee on Doctoral Education (NUF) is responsible for evaluating the third-cycle education, and the Educational Committee (NUGA) is responsible for evaluating the first- and second-cycle education. Representatives from the boards should regularly inform the Faculty Board on how the work with the evaluations is proceeding.

The quality evaluation on all levels of education should be done partly through self-evaluation, and partly through peer review by external experts who are chosen by the Faculty Board.

Students should be involved through representatives from the Law Doctoral Student Council in matters regarding doctoral education and the Law Students' Union in matters regarding first- and second-cycle studies.

The evaluations take place in three rounds, where the doctoral education is evaluated first, then the Master's programmes in European Business Law and International Human Rights Law, and finally the Law programme.
